It is approaching 150,000 deaths from COVID-19

Brazil registered 729 new deaths from COVID-19 and 27,750 infections in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths close to 150,000 and the number of infected exceeding five million, the Government reported this Thursday.

In total numbers, the South American giant adds 148,957 deaths by the new coronavirus and 5,028,444 confirmed cases of the disease, according to the most recent balance of the Ministry of Health.

Coronavirus lethality

According to the report, the fatality of the coronavirus in Brazil It continues at 3% of all infected, but the rate of deaths from the disease, which had been at 70 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants for several weeks, has registered slight increases this week (70.5 deaths the day before and 71 deaths today) .

The same has happened with the incidence rate that until last week stood at 2,364 infections per 100,000 inhabitants and this Thursday is already in the 2,379.6 infected per 100,000 inhabitants, one of the highest in America and Europe.

Country very affected

The figures confirm Brazil as one of the countries most affected by the pandemic. With its 210 million inhabitants, it is the second nation in the world with the most deaths from COVID-19, behind the United States, and the third with the most infections on the planet, after India.

Despite the figures, the country already has more than 4.41 million patients recovered and discharged, which corresponds to 87.8% of the total and another 464,923 cases (9.2%) are under monitoring.

After seven months of pandemic, the South American giant has not seen the end of it and for almost two months it has remained in a relative stability in most of its territory.

Economic reopening

The reactivation of the economy, which has allowed the reopening of shops, bars, restaurants, and even movie theaters in some cities, shows an apparent normality in the main metropolises, with many people on the streets and without a visible fear of the virus.

However, the increase in cases in some regions of the country sets off alarms, according to experts, which have called for caution.

Rio de Janeiro, the second state with the highest number of deaths -more than 19,000- and the fourth in number of cases -280,144- is one of those regions. Last week, Rio registered five consecutive days of decrease in cases, after ten consecutive days of increase.
