India unveils secure mobile OS, BharOS, for businesses and high-security use.
India has unveiled a new mobile operating system called BharOS, developed by the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. BharOS is a Linux-based operating system which is more secure than Alphabet Inc.’s Android and is designed to be used in businesses and high-security surroundings. The operating system does not come with any default apps and only gives users access to trusted apps from private store services. The launch of BharOS is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of making India self-reliant in digital infrastructure, with the intention of benefiting the country’s poor.

The launch of BharOS comes at a time when Google is facing an antitrust case in India, with the country’s competition watchdog asking the tech giant to take measures such as allowing smartphone users to uninstall certain apps and letting them use their preferred search engine. Despite this, BharOS faces an uphill task in a market dominated by Android, which runs roughly 97% of India’s 620 million smartphones.

The development of BharOS is a positive step in India’s goal of becoming self-reliant in digital infrastructure. The operating system is more secure than Alphabet Inc.’s Android and is designed to be used in businesses and high-security surroundings. It does not come with any default apps and only gives users access to trusted apps from private store services. This is beneficial for India’s poor, as it provides them with access to secure digital infrastructure.

Despite the launch of BharOS, Google still dominates the Indian mobile operating system market, with Android running on 97% of the country’s 620 million smartphones. Google is facing an antitrust case in India, with the country’s competition watchdog asking the tech giant to take measures such as allowing smartphone users to uninstall certain apps and letting them use their preferred search engine.

Overall, the development of BharOS is a positive step in India’s goal of becoming self-reliant in digital infrastructure. The operating system is more secure than Alphabet Inc.’s Android and is designed to be used in businesses and high-security surroundings. However, Google still dominates the Indian mobile operating system market and is currently facing an antitrust case in the country. It remains to be seen if BharOS will be successful in competing with Google’s Android operating system.
