“India is considering an emergency vaccination authorization for Covid-19. If there is a consensus, we could make the decision, especially for the elderly and people working in high-risk environments, “said Health Minister Harsh Vardhan.
Vardhan said the phase 3 clinical trial program will be shortened by granting emergency clearance. But he stressed that there will be no shortcuts in clinical trials and that the vaccine will only be distributed when the government can make sure it is safe and effective.
He also said that no date has been set for the launch of a vaccine, but added that the results of clinical trials should be clear in the first quarter of 2021.
On Sunday, the Ministry of Health reported 94,372 new cases of Covid-19 and 1,114 deaths.
The high number of cases of Covid-19 hampered the government’s efforts to revive the economy, which contracted by 23.9% between April and June.
