The record-breaking and most exciting time trial of the 2020 Formula One season brought a surreal result. Racing Point benefited the most from Saturday’s Toto-killer Saturday: Lance Stroll took the first start of his career, while Sergio Pérez, who seemed a favorite for a long time, finished third. In the pink sandwich, Max Verstappen closed with Red Bull.

Following the knockdown, former Formula 1 driver and endurance world champion Mark Webber conducted the interviews with the top three finishers.

Since 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve, Lance Stroll is the first Canadian pole position in Formula One, and he is the second rider to win a pole with Racing Point – the first was Giancarlo Fisichella, who even qualified with his predecessor Force India to the forefront of the 2009 Belgian weekend.

Lance Stroll (Racing Point, 1.): “I am shocked. We didn’t look competitive in the last free practice, but of course I’m very happy now. In the end, I managed to put this lap together, I only had one throw on the transitional tires. I trusted the car, neatly stitched the curves and then the whole lap. Nice setback for the last few difficult weeks. This is a special moment for me, one of the greatest of his career! ”

Max Verstappen (Red Bull, 2.): “We already tried the intermediate tires in Q1, but we didn’t have traction. In Q3, the track was already much better, but the intermediates worked terribly for us. In contrast, the extreme rain tires were good and comfortable, which is not so good. Obviously I’m a little disappointed now. We can still do well in the race tomorrow, but if you stand in first place for a long time and then second, that’s not what you want. ”

Sergio Pérez (Racing Point, 3.): “It’s a great result for the team, we really didn’t expect that! I’m happy because the end was just luck. The car was the best on the last nail. It was a good decision to switch interests, which we were strong with at the beginning, but it is clear the position will be the key tomorrow in terms of tire temperature. I think the third starting point is better than the second, I think there will be a difference between the two at the start. ”
