Congress must regulate AI to ensure safety, prevent discrimination and benefit society.
Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) recently wrote an op-ed in the New York Times calling for Congress to take more steps to regulate Artificial Intelligence (AI). He outlined the risks AI poses to society, such as self-driving vehicles and facial recognition systems, and how it can be used to discriminate against people of color. He proposed creating an AI Commission, staffed with experts, that could recommend how to structure a federal agency to regulate AI. He believes this will help ensure that AI is used in ways that are safe, ethical and beneficial for society. As AI technology continues to advance, it is essential that steps are taken to ensure its safety and ethical use.
