McCarthy: Santos will be removed if found guilty by Ethics Committee.

Kevin McCarthy, the House Republican leader from California, has said that if the House Ethics Committee finds that New York Congressman George Santos has broken the law, he will be removed from office. McCarthy noted that it is the responsibility of the Congressman to uphold what his constituents voted for, and if it rises to a legal level, they will deal with it. Democratic Reps. Ritchie Torres and Daniel Goldman have filed a complaint with the Ethics Committee, alleging that Santos failed to file timely, accurate, and complete financial disclosure reports. McCarthy has appointed Rep. Michael Guest to serve as chairman of the panel, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has nominated five Democrats to the committee. The Ethics Committee is known for saying little publicly about its investigations, and Santos is also under investigation by prosecutors in New York and Brazil. McCarthy has not called for Santos to resign, instead deferring to the Ethics panel and noting that the voters in New York’s 3rd Congressional District should have the ultimate say. The House Republican Steering Committee has recommended that Santos serve on the House Small Business Committee and the House Science, Space and Technology Committee.
