The controversial Hong Kong Security Act enters into force today, the region’s chief administrative officer Carrie Lam says. According to Lam, the regional government will publish the text of the law as soon as possible.
President of China Xi Jinping signed the law a moment ago, China State News Agency Xinhua said.
The preparation of the law has been overshadowed by a lack of transparency. Hong Kong residents have no idea exactly what the law contains and what activities the law criminalizes.
However, there are fears that the law will effectively end Hong Kong’s status as a Special Administrative Region.
