New York Islanders contract player Otto Koivula, 22, transfers the loan to HIFK. Koivula will play for the Helsinki club until the beginning of the NHL season.
The clubs announced the matter on Friday.
Koivula has played in the last two seasons in North America. The striker has played mainly in the AHL at Bridgeport Sound Tigers, where he has scored 30 + 38 in 105 matches. Koivula has played 12 NHL matches.
The Finnish striker played in the Finnish Championships in his breeders’ club in Ilves in 2016–2018. He struck 57 power points in 103 Finnish Championships.
– Otto plays with us as a cent. He is a large-scale, strong and very well-understood striker, sports director Tobias Salmelainen commented in the press release.
HIFK has acquired a large number of players from North America. NHL organizations have arrived in Helsinki Antti Suomela, Emil Bemström, Joona Luoto and Henrik Borgström.
According to Salmelainen, the reason for the acquisitions is the team’s bad injury sum.
– All our loan agreements have been made because we have a lot of injuries. We want to allow injured players to have proper time to rehabilitate, and no one feels the need to rush their own return to the trough.
Injured at HIFK are Niklas Nordgren (week), Juha Jääskä (3 weeks), Micke Åsten (4 weeks), Ville Leskinen (2-3 months), Rasmus Heljanko (2-3 months), Teemu Tallberg (3-4 weeks), Joonas Lyytinen (two weeks), Henrik Borgström (four weeks) and Lennart Petrell (so far).
Koivula will not play against Kärppi on Friday.
