Ciro Immobile (30) knows very well how Erling Braut Haaland (20) feels. But while the Norwegian has taken Dortmund by storm, the Italian packed the snippet box after only one year.
On Tuesday night, they will probably meet when Lazio host Borussia Dortmund for a Champions League match.
Immobile was brought to Dortmund from Turin, where he had played big, to replace Robert Lewandowski, who had disappeared to Bayern Munich the same summer (2014).
It did not go so well.
Three goals in 24 Bundesliga appearances.
In comparison, Erling Braut Haaland has scored 17 goals in his first 19 Bundesliga matches for the yellow-clad.
– Immobile was to replace Lewandowski when he went to Bavaria six years ago. He took Lewandowski’s kit number, had a fantastic Torino season behind him and had recently gained steady confidence in the national team. But it was the start of the only two weak seasons in his career, with only ten league goals in two years. It was only in the Champions League that he delivered for the Germans, says Even Braastad, commentator in Strive and half of the podcast “Bootball” about Italian football.
He talks about Immobile’s two failed club stays – first in Borussia Dortmund, then in Sevilla.
Since 2016, Immobile has been fantastic for Lazio. In 2019/20, he received the Golden Shoe for the highest scoring player in European football.
– Even though he has been the top scorer in Serie A three times and he only has Fabio Quagliarella ahead of him on the list of active players with several goals, there are still some divided opinions about Immobile. Much because he has not managed to score as many goals for the national team as in the club, says Even Braastad.
