Kai Havertz made his first appearance in the Chelsea shirt on Wednesday by contributing to a 6-0 victory over Barnsley in the League Cup with a hat-trick. It leads to optimism in both the German top purchase itself and his trainer Frank Lampard.
“This is my first hat-trick and it means a lot to me. This ball gets a nice place at home”, says a proud Havertz, who came over from Bayer Leverkusen for 80 million euros on the site Chelsea van.
“The first two games were very difficult for me, because I hadn’t really had any preparation and only trained for a week. But step by step I will get fitter. This gives me confidence.”
The 21-year-old Havertz, who played relatively anonymously in his first matches against Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool, made it 2-0, 4-0 and 5-0 against Championship club Barnsley.
“The evening could not have been better for him,” said Lampard. “It was a great experience for Havertz, also to master our way of playing. I am very happy for him, and this is just the beginning.”
Havertz and Chelsea continue the season on Saturday, when an away game against West Bromwich Albion is scheduled in the Premier League.
