In Portimao, Lewis Hamilton scored a record 92nd victory in dominant style.
Lewis Hamilton: “I dedicate my victory to all Mercedes employees. They work fantastically, constantly invent new things and set an even higher goal each season. It is a great honor for me to cooperate with them, thank them for everything!
Our car is incredibly reliable. I am grateful to Mercedes, Petronas and all our partners for the fact that they are constantly working to the limit, do not stop at what has been achieved and continue to make efforts again and again. There is nothing better than working in such an atmosphere, it is very inspiring, and you will hardly see such effective cooperation anywhere else!
It was not easy to maintain the correct temperature of the tires today. Luckily, I foresaw this when I chose the settings and ended up doing a pretty good job. We were promised rain right after the finish, but a few drops fell on the track just before the start. I got off the ground well, but in the seventh corner there was oversteer. I didn’t know what to expect next, so I slowed down. I could have defended a little more aggressively from Valtteri’s attacks, but I decided that I would try to recoup later – fortunately, I did it.
Any Formula 1 race requires serious physical effort, today my right leg was periodically cramped. I had to let go of the gas pedal in a straight line to avoid another spasm. It was very painful, but I had to endure, because you can’t drive half-heartedly the whole circle.
I could only dream of such a success! Looks like I pulled out a lucky ticket when I decided to join Mercedes! We try to get the most out of every day, we have the same aspirations – that’s why we manage to win again and again. Here with me is my father, my dog Roscoe – it’s just a wonderful day! I had a record 92nd victory, but it will take me a while to fully understand this. Today, even after the finish, I was racing at full speed, as I remained in the racing mode! I have no words”.
