The Secretary of Public Health and manager of the Institut Català de la Salut (ICS), Josep Maria Argimon, has indicated this Thursday that one out of every two cases of coronavirus that is detected in Catalonia no symptoms and which are being detected thanks to screening and testing of close contacts.

That is why the head of the Covid-19 Tracking Unit, Jacobo Mendioroz, has highlighted, in the same press conference to report on the situation of the pandemic in Catalonia, the importance of raising awareness among the population that the disease can be transmitted even if there are no symptoms.

Quick tests in 7-10 days

And to help raise awareness, it is planned to put into circulation the rapid antigen tests that, according to the corporate head of the laboratories of the Catalan Institute of Health (ICS), Maria Antonia Llopis, will be distributed in a week or ten days and initially in hospitals without laboratories and primary care centers.

Although Argimon has indicated that “everything will be very changing and very dynamic”, for now, the indications for this type of rapid test, which does not require laboratory analysis and offers results in 15 minutes, will be for symptomatic patients and their contacts.

The Secretary of Public Health, who last week said that Catalonia already has a million tests of this type, has stressed that these tests will “unload” the workload that laboratories have for the analysis of PCR.
