Due to the unchecked increase in the number of infections, the Austrian government has imposed a tough lockdown.
Austria will significantly tighten the previous corona rules. The Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (34) announced in a press conference. By completely shutting down public life, the number of infections, which had risen sharply despite the partial lockdown that has been in place since November 3, should be brought under control.
The tightened measures are to apply from Tuesday, November 17th through December 6th. In addition to the largely closed catering, tourism and cultural businesses as well as leisure facilities, a large part of the trade is now to close. Shops for daily needs such as supermarkets, drug stores and pharmacies are excluded.
Curfew also during the day
Body-hugging services such as hairdressers, beauticians or tattooists are also affected. Schools are also to be closed. They should switch to distance learning. Families who need childcare should still be able to take advantage of this. Anyone who can do their work from the home office should do so.
In addition, the curfew, which so far only applies at night, should also apply during the day. You can then only leave the house for a very specific reason – for example to go to work or play sports. Chancellor Sebastian Kurz also urged the population not to meet anyone. “Every social contact is one too many,” said Kurz. This is the only way to save “Christmas and the pre-Christmas period”.
Despite partial lockdown, Austria reported almost 10,000 new infections last Friday (November 13th) within 24 hours. Many experts anticipate that the Austrian health system will soon reach its limits.
