The new mobile operating system from Google got a new version on Tuesday: Android 11. The new version of Android had been in development for some time, but on Tuesday Google announced that the first Android phones can download and install Android 11.
Android 11 will be available first on the Pixel phones. This is the smartphone brand from Google itself. In addition, Android 11 will also follow quickly for recent models from OnePlus, Xiaomi and OPPO, Google writes.
It is not yet known when other major smartphone manufacturers will roll out the new version of Android. This depends on how soon they get their own version of Android 11 ready. Some manufacturers adapt more to Android than others.
The previous version of the operating system is Android 10 and was released in September 2019. With Android 11, Google is bringing a number of new functionalities to smartphones and tablets. For example, Android users can use chat bubbles with the new version. These balloons can be displayed over other apps, allowing you to get to active conversations faster.
In addition, you can prioritize notifications of messages from specific contacts so that you never miss messages from them. Notifications from, for example, WhatsApp messages can always be shown at the top, so that you see them first.
Not all Android smartphones will get the new version of Android. A manufacturer may decide to stop supporting a phone with the new version because the phone is too old or too slow. It remains to be seen which smartphones will get Android 11.
