Go Ahead Eagles reached the second round of the tournament for the TOTO KNVB Cup on Monday evening in a childishly simple way. The team from Deventer humiliated NAC Breda, plagued by the corona virus: 6-0. Excelsior also settled easily with competitor Helmond Sport (4-0).

Two days after Ajax’s historic 0-13 victory at VVV-Venlo in the Eredivisie, Go Ahead Eagles seemed to follow the example of the team from Amsterdam in the cup tournament. After twenty minutes it was already 5-0 in Deventer, where NAC took office with a B-formation due to the many corona infections.
Sam Beukema headed in the opening goal in the seventh minute, after which Sam Hendriks, Zakaria Eddahchouri, Jeroen Veldmate (penalty) and Luuk Brouwers quickly expanded the score by defensive fumbling at NAC.
It seemed like a matter of time before Go Ahead would hit the double digits, but the home team slowed down and NAC became less vulnerable. It was not until the 48th minute that Antoine Rabillard’s 6-0 fell and that was also the case at the Adelaarshorst, where NAC played the third game in six days.
NAC trainer Maurice Steijn said against it just before kick-off FOX Sports that he would rather not have played the cup match at all because of the corona outbreak within the selection. “Ten players have been affected by the corona virus. We find it irresponsible to play three incredibly tough matches in six days.”
NAC does not have a lot of time to prepare for the next game. The ‘Pearl of the South’ awaits a home game against NEC in the league on Friday.

Just like Go Ahead Eagles, Excelsior reached the second round with playful ease. The team from Rotterdam already led 2-0 against Helmond Sport at half time by goals from Reuven Niemeijer and Elías Már Ómarsson, who leads the top scorers list in the Kitchen Champion Division with ten goals.
The 25-year-old Icelander also tapped the third goal 15 minutes after the break. Joël Zwarts determined the final score in the 68th minute with a hard shot at 4-0. Goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel of Helmond Sport took a header from Thomas Oude Kotte off the line in the final phase.
This week, only professional football clubs will play in the KNVB cup, because the games of the amateur clubs have been moved to December. Due to the corona measures, no games in amateur football may be played at the moment.
