Solid skills, great connoisseur of our event, design skills for the indispensable future innovation in the digital field of our Festival. Giona A. Nazzaro has an international mentality and at the same time a strong bond with Ticino and Switzerland. Thanks, then, to the past director Lili Hilstin, if you ask me why I tell you that with her artistic direction the festival has grown from an artistic point of view. From that point of view the relationship had worked well, the strategy linked to the operation of the festival was divergent, a very painful divorce, now we look forward as always in an event that has a permanent restlessness, even making mistakes, but always looking to the future. “

Giona A. Nazzaro commented his appointment as follows: “It is an honor to direct the Locarno Film Festival, an institution that has always promoted auteur and quality cinema, today more than ever a laboratory of great vitality projected towards the future of the moving image. I will immediately get to work in the hope of being able to reopen Piazza Grande, the beating heart of the event and a symbol of cinema resistance, with a broad dialogue with all audiences, without creating ghettos for genres. Today there are specialists who are self-referential, they are areas that I would like to communicate with each other. Cinema must be considered without gender barriers. Locarno restarts from the Piazza Grande “.

Giona A. Nazzaro will take up full office on 1 January 2021, and will immediately work alongside Nadia Dresti, interim head of the artistic direction until the end of December 2020. Nadia Dresti will continue to be responsible for coordinating Locarno pro also in the first months of 2021, until further notice. The 74th edition of the Locarno Film Festival will be held from 4 to 14 August 2021. The precise modalities will be indicated in due course, if the health conditions and national regulations require changes.
