Germany, Ireland and Italy have been the first three European Union countries to connect their national covid-19 case tracking applications to the community platform that will inform the citizens of the block if they have had contact with infected people even if they have traveled to another country. As reported by the European Commission in a statement, the three applications from these three countries have been downloaded by 30 million people, which corresponds to two thirds of all downloads of tracking ‘apps’ in the EU.

The community tool has been active since last September 29 after passing a two-week pilot phase in which six Member States participated (Germany, Italy, Ireland, Czech Republic, Denmark and Latvia), but no country had yet connected their program to the common network.

The connection of the first three was already scheduled for the middle of this month and in the coming days the applications of the other three countries that participated in the test phase will be connected. From the beginning of November, the partners who contributed to the development of the platform, including Spain (along with Austria, Estonia, the Netherlands and Poland), will be able to join.

Manual tracking

Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides stressed that coronavirus tracking and alert applications “can effectively complete other measures, such as increased diagnostic tests and manual contact tracing.”

“At a time when cases are on the rise again, they can play an important role in breaking the chains of transmission. By operating across borders, they are even more powerful tools,” added the Cypriot.

The Community Executive trusts that the twenty member states that have developed applications for tracking the coronavirus in their populations are connected to the European “gateway” before the end of the year.

Country of origin

This tool will allow national applications to warn users that they have had contact with people who have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 during a trip to another Member State in which an ‘app’ other than that of the country is used. origin. And all this without having to download an application other than the national one, although users will have to update this second one when their countries have joined the community “gateway”.
