The leadership of the Catholic Church in Germany has set up compensation of up to 50,000 euros for minors sexually abused by members of the clergy, reports AFP, quoted by Agerpres.

At the Fulda meeting of German bishops, the proposal was validated as a “victim-oriented process (…) a big step forward,” said Georg Bätzing, the assembly’s president. At the same time, he reminds us that the Church also bears the therapeutic costs.

However, the victims’ associations consider these compensations to be “symbolic”, which is why they announce that they will launch a petition to organize a debate on this issue in the Bundestag.

Requests from civic associations spoke of two ways to compensate minors sexually abused by Catholic clergy: a lump sum payment of 300,000 euros or an individualized payment system with amounts between 40,000 and 400,000 euros depending on the severity of each case.

“Victims have been waiting for ten years,” when the first cases of sexual abuse were revealed, “a fair compensation not only for past crimes, but also for the systematic concealment of these acts and the protection of their perpetrators,” according to the text of the petition. published by the Eckiger Tisch association.

A study conducted two years ago by independent researchers, but commissioned by the Church, revealed that 3,677 minors have been sexually abused by more than a thousand members of the clergy since 1946. The authors of this study, who had no but access to all the archives of the Church, considers that the number of victims is undoubtedly higher, reports Agerpres.
