DOE announces $16M funding for scientific machine learning research on complex systems.

The Department of Energy’s Office of Science has recently announced a funding opportunity for scientific machine learning for complex systems. The deadline for pre-applications is March 1, 2023 and the deadline for applications is April 12, 2023. The funding is for basic research to explore high-impact approaches in the development and use of scientific machine learning and artificial intelligence in the predictive modeling, simulation, and analysis of complex systems and processes. This funding opportunity is focused on combining traditional scientific computing expertise with machine learning-based adaptivity and acceleration to increase the performance and throughput of inner-loop modeling. Relevant domains of application include materials, environmental, and life sciences; high-energy, nuclear, and plasma physics, and the DOE Energy Earthshots Initiative.

The combination of traditional scientific computing and machine learning-based approaches offers the potential for more versatile neural networks for function and operator approximations, more domain-knowledge and interpretability of differential equations and operators, and more robustness of high-performance scientific computing software. The proposed projects should focus on specific complex systems, but the applied mathematics research advances must have more general applicability. Those interested in applying for the funding opportunity should review the eligibility and application information provided.
