The Fraud Help Desk registered many more victims of online shopping fraud in 2020 than in 2019. This year, 2,581 people reported to have been victims so far, the Fraud Help Desk told Press. Last year there were a total of 1,582.
This year’s figures provide insight into the period from January to October. In total, online shopping fraud was reported 3,700 times, compared to 2,361 times last year. The Fraud Help Desk bundles complaints from people who buy or sell something online in its reports. This includes not only fake web shops, but also sales via Marktplaats, for example.
Since the end of last year, there has been a sharp increase in the number of reports. The peak is in the summer months. This could be partly explained by the corona crisis. According to the Fraud Help Desk, fraudsters are taking advantage of the change in the online behavior of Dutch people, who have started ordering more online. The amount of damage suffered so far in 2020 is also higher than last year: 577,705 euros compared to 463,229 euros.
The number of reports against fake web shops has also increased this year compared to last year, the WE Wednesday. Figures from the police show that so far this year more than 13,000 reports have been filed against rogue web shops; that was 7,400 last year.
The police suspect that fake online stores have been set up in recent weeks to make more victims during the holidays.
