National and local police arrested the perpetrator, who was taken to hospital after being shot.

According to an unofficial source, one of the victims was beheaded and the other strangled – an officially unconfirmed information, reports Le Figaro.

A team of engineers went to the scene, and explosions were heard in the neighborhood, where a suspicious package was detonated.

The trail of a terrorist attack is not ruled out.

“After talking to Christian Estrosi on the phone, I chaired a candlelight meeting at the Interior Ministry,” French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced on Twitter.

Nice mayor Christian Estrosi came to the scene.

“I confirm that everything suggests a terrorist attack on the Basilica of Notre-Dame,” the mayor also announced on Twitter.

Notre-Dame Basilica is located on the Boulevard Jean Médecin, in the center of Nice, a city bloodied by a truck bombing on France’s National Day in 2016.
