The seventh season in Formula E history will mark the first time that the electric series has achieved World Championship status, and organizers are considering hosting one of the events in 2021 in Portugal.
And we are not talking about a temporary city track, on which Formula E races usually take place, but about a stationary circuit – either Estoril or Algarve.
Due to the pandemic, events in 2020 developed according to an unforeseen scenario, so non-standard decisions had to be made, in particular, the season ended with six races in Berlin on the track of three different configurations, laid on the territory of the old Templhof airfield.
Therefore, now the organizers of the world championship in racing in electric cars, when drawing up the calendar for the next season, are trying to foresee various backup options in advance. According to The Race, one of the stages may take place in Portugal.
Due to the restrictions in force in the context of the pandemic, conducting races on urban tracks becomes very difficult, if not impossible. It is difficult to predict whether the situation in 2021 will be more favorable, but since the Estoril circuit is located on the outskirts of Lisbon in the immediate vicinity of urban areas, it may at least give a sense of the atmosphere familiar to Formula E.
The possibility of holding a race at the circuit them. Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, where Formula E teams will meet for the official pre-season tests in November.
Of the two Portuguese tracks, Estoril has a better chance, and there the race could take place in April, if it fails to hold the stages planned for the spring in Rome and Paris.
By the way, on Saturday, the reigning Formula E champion, Antonio Felix da Costa, held a demonstration in Lisbon, driving along a 20-kilometer route through the streets of the Portuguese capital with a police escort.
According to Alberto Longo, one of the organizers and sporting director of the electric championship, da Costa’s successes are an additional argument in favor of the Portuguese option: “It is very nice to see what a warm welcome he received at home, celebrating the main achievement of his career.
We are very attracted to the prospects of the race in Portugal, and we will study them with interest, especially since Antonio has already felt what it is like to perform at home in front of his fans. “
