Tonny Bruins Slot passed away on Sunday, Ajax reports on Monday. The ‘master scout’, who previously was an assistant coach at Ajax and FC Barcelona, has turned 73.
Bruins Slot was Cruijff’s right-hand man
Bruins Slot had been ill for some time, but still worked for Ajax, where he was responsible for the match analyzes of opponents. Last month, he provided the analysis of Liverpool for trainer Erik ten Hag in the run-up to the Champions League match in the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
“He was very loved by all of us here at Ajax”, says director of football affairs Marc Overmars in a first reaction to the death of Bruins Slot.
Bruins Slot had a modest career as a player at clubs such as DWS and Blauw-Wit. In 1972 he joined FC Amsterdam as a scout. Ten years later he became an assistant coach of Ajax.
The Amsterdammer was also head coach of Ajax for a short time. At the end of the 1984/1985 season, he and Spitz Kohn and Cor van der Hart had final responsibility on the bench after trainer Aad de Mos was fired. The three led the team to the national title in the last five games.
In the years that followed, Bruins Slot was Johan Cruijff’s right-hand man, first at Ajax and then at FC Barcelona. With Ajax he won the European Cup II in 1987 and five years later he conquered the European Cup I with FC Barcelona. He also won the national championship four times with the Spanish top club.
Bruins Slot was seen as a master scout, because in his famous analyzes he could well determine the strength and weakness of the opponents in advance.
After Cruijff stopped as a trainer in 1996, Bruins Slot often worked with Ronald Koeman. That cooperation started in 2001 at Ajax and later continued at AZ, Benfica and PSV. In recent years, Bruins Slot has been employed by Ajax again.
