The Chinese government would take drastic measures to curb birth rates among the Uyghur population and other minorities as part of a large-scale campaign to reduce the Muslim population. AP reports this on Monday.

Birth rates in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, mainly inhabited by a Uighur Muslim minority, have fallen by 24 percent in the last year compared to 4.2 percent across the country.

The British newspaper The Independent wrote in October last year about forced abortions and widespread sexual torture among Uyghur women. However, these practices are much more widespread and systematic than previously known. AP reports this on the basis of various sources, including government statistics, documents, interviews with ex-prisoners of the Chinese re-education camps for Uyghurs in Xianjiang and people who worked in those camps. Some experts speak of a genocide.

Abortion in camps

The government would regularly subject Uyghur women to pregnancy checks and would also force them to take birth control, undergo sterilization, or even have an abortion. These population-restricting measures are enforced by sending them to the re-education camps. On the one hand as a threat and on the other as a punishment for not following the rules, it sounds.

“This is a genocide, period. These are direct means of genetically reducing the population of the Uyghurs, ”said Joanne Smith Finley, a professor of Chinese studies specializing in the Uyghurs.

According to experts, the campaign is part of a state-organized attack on Uyghurs to purify them of their beliefs and identities in order to assimilate them into the dominant Han culture. Since 2018, a law has been approved in China that legalizes the re-education camps for Uyghurs. According to the Chinese government, a measure to combat extremism and terrorism. China is estimated to hold over a million Uyghurs in such re-education camps.
