Trainer Hansi Flick is happy that Bayern Munich immediately showed against Schalke 04 on Friday that the level of his team is once again extremely high. The ‘Rekordmeister’ won at the Bundesliga start with no less than 8-0 in the Allianz Arena.

‘It was a poor performance’

“Before the game, we said to each other that we wanted to send a signal for this season. And we did. The confidence is high,” said Flick, who won the treble with Bayern last season. “It is clear that the bar is set high again.”

Less than a month after the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain (1-0) won, Bayern did not suffer much from Schalke 04, partly due to a hat-trick by Serge Gnabry. Leroy Sané, who has come over from Manchester City, was also accurate and gave his Bayern debut that extra shine.

Shortly after the monster victory, 24-year-old Sané said that he immediately felt at home in Munich. “I am happy to finally be able to play with the boys,” said the German international. “They are still hungry after all the prizes from last season.”

The next prize beckons for Bayern next Thursday, because then Europa League winner Sevilla in the Puskás Aréna in Budapest will be the opponent in the battle for the European Supercup. And then the thirty-time national champion also awaits the match for the German Supercup against Borussia Dortmund on September 30.

For Schalke 04 it could be a bad year, after the club from Gelsenkirchen was already disappointingly twelfth last season. “We have to lick our wounds, it was a poor performance,” said coach David Wagner after being humiliated by Bayern.

“But yes, Bayern is in fantastic shape. I think they have the best team in the world right now.”
