The top match in the Ligue 1 between Paris Saint-Germain against Olympique Marseille ended in a bizarre way on Sunday. Deep in injury time of the game, which Marseille won 0-1, the players had a fight with each other with five red cards as a result.
PSG is eighteenth in Ligue 1
In the seventh minute of extra time, things got out of hand after a duel between Leandro Paredes of PSG and Dario Benedetto of Olympique Marseille.
A riot ensued that involved many players. Referee Jérôme Brisard drew red for Paredes and Benedetto and Layvin Kurzawa (PSG), Neymar (PSG) and Jordan Amavi (Marseille) also had to leave.
Kevin Strootman was also involved in the riot, but he was allowed to stand. The Orange-international had come in in the 68th minute in the Parc des Princes in Paris and had received yellow a few minutes before the riot. In total there were twelve yellow cards.
At PSG Mitchel Bakker sat on the bench for ninety minutes, while Xavi Simons was not part of the match selection.
The three red cards for PSG make the malaise for the reigning national champion even greater. The team of trainer Thomas Tuchel already lost the first league match from Lens (1-0) last week and is still without points. It is the first time since the 1978/1979 vintage that PSG falls in the first two league games without scoring. That season the Parisians finished in thirteenth place.
Only Dijon and Strasbourg are now lower than number eighteen PSG, because those two teams have already played three games. In the previous Ligue 1 season that was broken by the corona virus, PSG only lost a total of three times.
PSG could argue against Lens that no fewer than seven players were missing due to the corona virus, including Neymar, Kylian Mbappé and Ángel Di Maria. Against Marseille, Di Maria and Neymar were there again, but that was unsuccessful. French international Florian Thauvin scored the only goal in Paris in the 31st minute.
