James Hobson, the engineer and personality of YouTube, finally created what so many nerds and fans of SF dreamed of: he created a functional – and potentially lethal – lightsaber that would fit a real Jedi.

Many fans of “Star Wars” tried to create a real light sword, but only managed to get the look by using non-retractable metal tubes and light – in other words, a slightly different flashlight.

But now, the engineers behind the YouTube channel „The Hacksmith” they created a “Star Wars” style lightsaber that burns hot enough to cut steel.

Team leader James Hobson says it is “the first plasma-retractable laser sword.” And for now, we’re willing to take his word for it.

The steampunk sword can send a laminar flow of compressed liquid propane gas and oxygen, which burns at 2200 degrees Celsius.

To allow it to burn in such a specific way, the team used “laminar nozzles”, which allow the evacuation of an extremely concentrated flow of gas, creating a plasma beam. These nozzles cost quite a lot – about $ 4,000 each – and are often used in the glassblowing industry.

Thanks to the addition of special salts, the lightsaber can be transformed into different colors, including yellow, green and red.

The lightsaber needs an external power pack. To recreate the energy of the light swords we see in movies, Hobson says you would need as much energy as a nuclear power plant.

And yes, it turns out to be as strong as it looks. In one demonstration, the lightsaber was able to burn and penetrate even through a steel door. It really seems to be one of the most suitable Christmas gifts for a true Star Wars fan.
