Honda will be out of Formula 1 at the end of 2021, and since Red Bull can’t really expect, but doesn’t want to get an engine from rivals, the energy drink maker is considering taking over Japanese resource production, but for financial and technical reasons, it only they could afford to freeze, or at least significantly reduce, engine development in the sport from 2022 onwards. Without a competitive – you mean: own – motor option, Red Bull will get out, says motorsport boss Helmut Marko.
The Red Bull initiative enjoys the support of Mercedes, but Ferrari is completely opposed to it, and even the president of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), Jean Todt, has branded the threat of disembarkation as simple blackmail that he does not want to allow.
Marko reacted to Todt’s words, the Austrian says they are not bluffing, they are serious about leaving.
“It’s not blackmail, it’s a simple fact. If there is no development stop, we will not be able to take over the Honda project. Further development of today’s complex engines is impossible without a development center like the Szakurai. Plus, it’s financially impossible, ”he told Auto Motor und Sport.
“It seems easy to get an engine from someone else, but it’s not. You can imagine what it would be like to beat the factory team with a Ferrari engine. And they also have a lot of confidence in Renault that they will achieve something with their new engine and Alonso in 2022. If we cannot reach an agreement, departure is also an option. We have to be realistic, ”he continued.
