Charles Leclerc finished third in the first free practice of the Formula 1 Tuscany Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver ran an encouraging lap, just three tenths of a second behind the Mercedes Valtteri Bottas. Looking at the performance of the Maranellos this year, it was a surprise that such a good performance of the race car dressed in purple.

Leclerc saw the reason for the better performance in the June Muggle test, with which Ferrari took his 2018 car. “It helped us find the rhythm of the track, while the others had to get to know the new track. Maybe it helped us a little bit, ”he said. “It was positive,” he pointed to the experience of his first practice in Monaco. “On the other hand, however, we need to understand what has improved us. To be honest, it surprised us all a bit. ”

The momentum no longer lasted for the second ninety minutes: the Ferrari pair only finished in 10th and 12th place, respectively. “The second free practice was already what we had expected, but I think the field is tight and we will be able to move forward,” Leclerc, who once spun with Ferrari, assessed the day’s events.

The fast corners of the Mugello track expose the riders to serious forces, which the Monaco could only confirm. “Already in the second free practice, in the long stages, we could feel our necks, the competition will be tough,” he said.
