Lewis Hamilton finished last Sunday at 92, former Formula One lord Bernie Ecclestone on Wednesday at 90, but while the former is an F1 race win, the latter in the number of years of life. German Sport1 (also) talked to the Methuselah on his birthday, Hamilton’s successes, records and status were inevitably a topic.

While Ecclestone acknowledges the English pilot’s achievements, he believes others have been pretty embedded in his successes.

“It deserves the record, but I could most liken it to a poker player with four aces in his hand. He plays, the others sweat. I want to see a team with Max Verstappen, then we’ll see if he really makes so few mistakes, ”he began.

“Schumacher knew that, like Ferrari, (from 2010) Mercedes will have to build. So it’s almost tragic that someone else will reap the laurels in the end. Toto and the others. I don’t want to downplay their performance, but in 2014, all they had to do was pack them nicely into the bed despised by Ross Brawn, Michael and others. Their real result is that they were able to maintain the standard. Niki Lauda also played a big role in this, but the Mercedes engine itself was half the success, ”he explained.

Ecclestone had a brawl with Hamilton in the summer after the pilot accused the big old men of F1 of ignorance and reluctance, who were in some way critical of the world champion’s fighter anti-racist activism.

They were asked about this in the interview as well, but Ecclestone said he didn’t want to deal with what happened anymore, though he still had something to say about Hamilton and Mercedes.

“I don’t want to talk about that anymore. But I didn’t think Mercedes would give Hamilton so much influence that even the car would be painted black for its sake. I would say I would have preferred to see more black professionals added to the team to support the movement. There are many, very intelligent blacks who deserve the opportunity for better jobs, ”he added.
