Also on Thursday, Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen announced that this year is their last season at Haas, with the team not extending a contract with either of them. Team boss Günther Steiner said the decision was made two to three weeks ago and was announced to the riders last week.
There are plenty of options for Haas: there are Sergio Pérez and Nico Hülkenberg on the market, to hear that the team is negotiating with Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher, but even someone else could get in the way.
It could easily be that the team ends up agreeing on two money-making competitors. “We can also start on the line of money and talent. But there has to always be talent, it’s more important than money, ”Steiner explained.
“Some can also bring sponsorship with them. We consider every option, we don’t have to make a hasty decision. ”
Haas doesn’t necessarily want to certify an experienced and a rookie racer. “If you have an experienced racer and a rookie next to you who might have a hard time shaking in, you could lose your self-confidence. It’s good? No way. We just have to look at what happened to some of the riders who were on the same team as Max Verstappen. ”
“Maybe two rookies would be good, I don’t know yet. Time does not urge us. ”
“As for Kevin and Romain, we wanted to be sporty against them. We could have kept the decision to ourselves for a while, but the guys have been good to us in recent years. ”
“We made the decision two or three weeks ago, I called them last week. They weren’t happy about who would be happy about that, but they were both very understanding. We wanted to let them know in time, because the longer it took, the less chance they would have of finding something by 2021. ”
