By 2020, Racing Point had sent a copy of the 2019 Mercedes to the track, and it was no secret that if they had already been copied, the best possible model, the world championship car, would have been used as a basis. The winter tests suggested they had worked skillfully at Silverstone, but now, after 13 rounds, the team is still only in 5th place in the constructors ’championship – albeit on a par with McLaren 4 and only one unit behind Renault 3, while Ferrari still follows them with 31 points to import.
The team had a drag-and-drop season with 15 points taken away for copying, Sergio Perez, the coronavirus, was missing in two Silverstone rounds – Nico Hülkenberg jumped in to replace him but only started in the second round due to a technical error. Lance Stroll was caught by the virus – Hülkenberg helped him in again – but since his return, he has been struggling with the Canadian, points only to Mexicans who leave at the end of the year, and even managed to spoil his possible results.
Team boss Otmar Szafnauer isn’t happy either, it would be nice to end up only in 6th place in the league in the end.
“We have to put our hands up, we have to admit we haven’t gotten the most out of the last couple of races. We have a competitive package this year with high expectations, so it’s frustrating that we haven’t collected more points. In sports, it’s easy to change from a hero to a pariah, but any failure is also a learning opportunity. I am convinced that not only will we improve, but we will also draw motivation from these for our final hair, ”he explained.
“He’s got a lot of bad luck this year as well. Due to his incident in Portugal with Sergio Max, the podium chances were floated, and in retrospect, it would have been worthwhile to keep him out in Imola during the safety car section. ”
“Remember, this is Lance’s best Formula One season to date. It’s not just your podium placement that matters, but also the fact that you’ve reached a level of predictability. After eight rounds, he was still 4th in the league, in fantastic shape. Unfortunately, everything has come together for him since then: he competed for the podium in Mugello when he was punctured by a puncture, and he also did well in Russia when Leclerc pushed him out (in the first lap). ”
Szafnauer also said that the coronavirus infection had worn Stroll thoroughly, but he believes the team owner’s son will still find himself.
