Spain had the largest decline in the first eight months of the year, at 40.6 percent. In Italy, 38.9 percent, in France, 32 percent, and in Germany, 28.8 percent fewer passenger cars were placed on the market than a year earlier.

In August, 769,000 cars were registered in the EU, 18.9 percent less than the 949,000 in August 2019. In July, the number of cars placed on the market was only 5.7 percent less than the 1.072 million number of 1.137 million a year earlier.

In August, with the exception of Cyprus, where annual growth was 14.1 per cent, the number of cars placed on the market in all EU countries fell from a year earlier. Among the major national markets, Italy was the best performer with a decline of 0.4 percent. In Germany, 20.0 per cent and in France 19.8 per cent fewer cars were placed on the market in August than a year earlier.

In Hungary, 15.6 thousand passenger cars were registered in August 2019 and 10.9 thousand in August this year, 30.1 percent less. From January to August, the number of cars on the market fell by 25.4 percent from 105.4 thousand in 2019 to 78.6 thousand.
