Esteban Ocon has not played on the Istanbul circuit before. In an interview, the Renault driver told how he prepared for the upcoming Turkish Grand Prix.
Question: What do you know about the Turkish circuit?
Esteban Ocon: Istanbul Park is a new track for me, I have never raced there. As a child, I watched all Formula 1 races in Turkey, I really liked the track. I remember how Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso fought on the last loop in 2006 until the finish line.
There are some cool corners on the track, the lap is very fast, and the riders have to work a lot on the steering wheel throughout its length. On modern machines it should be interesting.
The first corner is on the descent, so it’s pretty blind. In addition, there are both medium speed and fast corners that smoothly transition into one another. This is followed by a triple left eighth turn. It will impress you already with old cars. I think he will get even better at the wheel of modern cars this year. I look forward to trying it out.
We are usually fast on highways. I suppose we will have an interesting race – on the straights it is quite possible to overtake.
Q: How do you prepare for performances on the new track?
Esteban Ocon: I worked at home on a simulator to learn the track. Difficulties in the ring are associated with elevation differences and blind turns. Not so long ago, the asphalt was shifted in Turkey, and we will have to perform on harder tires, as in Portugal – then in the first days of the weekend the grip of the wheels with the track was very low.
We have little information at our disposal for preparation, but we will be able to work on Friday, so it should be easier than in Imola and Nürbugring. An interesting stage awaits us – recently we have been showing good shape and should perform well this weekend as well.
I want all my failures to be in the past, and I want to show good results.
