At the FIA press conference in Istanbul Park, Esteban Okon was asked if the same situation would repeat this weekend, in which the Renault team found themselves in Portimao, where the asphalt is also new and very smooth, and it turned out that it was difficult to warm up the tires on it …
Esteban Ocon: “I think, in any case, every weekend develops in its own way, one is not alike, and although it is possible that the new asphalt here resembles the one that was in Portimão, there will still be some differences.
For example, this trace is different in configuration. Of course, we use the same rubber, but the wind direction is different here, the temperatures are different, so first we need to check how the car will behave. I think on every track where we run, the feeling of piloting is a little different, and in some cases the car works a little worse.
But now we already have more information, we better understand its features, understand how to achieve improvements – after Portimão we had a lot of discussions on this topic. Therefore, now we have more options for settings than we had before the Portuguese stage, and we are certainly more ready for some surprises. If the situation with rubber really repeats itself, then you will have to put in more effort.
I think Renault has every chance to stay in 3rd place in the constructors’ championship. In the last races, Daniel Riccardo, my partner, got a lot of points, although I had problems. We must try to get both cars to the finish line, as it happened more than once in the earlier stages of the season, when we both earned points.
The fight is very tight, cars Renault, McLaren and Racing Point are very close in speed, and if we perform a little better this weekend, we may be ahead of the rivals. This is what we will be aiming for for the rest of the season. ”
