On the eve of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, Renault racer Esteban Ocon spoke about the features of the track in Imola and the results of the race in Portugal …
Question: What do you know about the track in Imola?
Esteban Ocon: I raced in Imola in European Formula 3 in 2014. I have fond memories of that weekend, because then I won the title one stage before the end of the season. I won the first race from pole and finished fourth in the second, and then went back up to the podium in the final race.
Imola is one of my favorite circuits and I can’t wait to drive through it in Formula 1. It will be an incredible experience. Besides, I like racing in Italy – this country has a big place in my heart.
Question: What does the circle in Imola look like?
Esteban Ocon: The track has an interesting mix of corners, each with a character like Acque Minerale. It is located on a small slope and is quite fast, with an ascent following the bend. There are height differences on the track, which also clearly characterizes it.
Curbs and chicanes like those in Imola are not found anywhere else. Riders love this combination of turns, which is the most important thing. Imola should have a higher grip on the track, as it has not been paved for many years and races take place regularly.
Question: How do you assess your performance in Portugal?
Esteban Ocon: It’s good that the team scored points with two cars during a tough weekend. We will analyze why we were not fast enough and will try to improve in Imola in order to achieve a better result.
As for me, I am happy to have driven more than 50 laps on one set of tires. The team did a great job and I am pleased with the way we acted during the race.
