Strawberries are undoubtedly one of the most delicious fruits out there. They are good when you eat them alone, but they have no comparison when you prepare a delicious dessert with them, such as strawberries with chocolate, cakes, pies, jam, etc. The problem comes when it comes to keep strawberries fresh.

When you get home, you go back to your daily responsibilities and the strawberries are forgotten in the refrigerator. Suddenly you remember them but it is too late. They have already become moldy and must be thrown away. What a waste!

Fortunately, there is a way to extend the shelf life of these berries. And do not worry. It will only take a few Few minutes in performing this trick. All you need are two simple ingredients and you can keep strawberries fresh for up to weeks.

How to keep strawberries fresh longer

Instructions:

  1. Place the strawberries in the bowl.
  2. Add a ratio of one part vinegar to five parts water to the strawberries until they are covered.
  3. Let it rest for a few minutes. The vinegar solution will kill bacteria and mold spores that cause strawberries to go bad very quickly. This is a more complete cleaning solution than rinsing them with water. You’ll probably notice some dirt and grime at the bottom of the container, but that’s a sign that the vinegar is working.
  4. Remove the strawberries from the vinegar solution and dry as much as possible. The remaining moisture could easily cause it to re-mold. You can use a salad spinner or pat them with paper towels.
  5. Store the strawberries on a paper towel in the refrigerator. Do not put them back in their container.

Health benefits of strawberries

Strawberries are sources of vitamins and nutrients like vitamin C, manganese, folate, and potassium.

They consist mainly of water, which makes them relatively low in carbohydrates and calories. Additionally, these carbohydrates come from simple sugars, but they also have 2 grams of fiber for every 100 grams of strawberries (about 26% of their carbohydrate content).

They have a low glycemic index, which means that they do not cause large spikes in blood sugar levels; This makes them safe to consume for people with diabetes.

Not only that, strawberries have been associated with reduced risk or symptoms of many chronic diseases, including heart disorders. This is because strawberries have been found to:

  • They reduce inflammation.
  • They improve the antioxidant status of the blood.
  • They promote good vascular function.
  • They improve your blood lipid profile.
  • They decrease oxidative stress.
  • Reduce the harmful oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol.
