Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will also give the captain’s armband to Harry Maguire this season, even though the defender was discredited last month and ended up in a Greek cell.
Maguire was involved in a brawl while on vacation on the island of Mykonos. He was found guilty of assault and sentenced to 21 months and 10 days in prison, although he does not have to serve that sentence.
“He remains our captain. He has handled the situation very well and I will of course support him,” said Solskjaer in an interview with MUTV, United’s club channel.
“We leave the process to the people who take care of it. Harry is a great person to me. He is always positive, with the right values and standards. I really hope we see him in his best shape this season.”
United took over Maguire from Leicester City last summer for almost 88 million euros. The England international thus relieved Virgil van Dijk as the world’s most expensive defender.
For United, the new club of Donny van de Beek, the Premier League season starts next Saturday with a home game against Crystal Palace.
