Hurricane Ianos hit the Thessaly region last night.
A 60-year-old man was found dead on Saturday near Karditsa. A 60-year-old woman was also found dead in a flooded house.
A 40-year-old woman disappeared in Mouzaki after her car was swept away by the Pamissos River.
Power outages occurred in Karditsa and other cities in the region, and water was cut off. There were floods and trees were blown down by the wind. Numerous buildings were also devastated, and firefighters were called in on Saturday to rescue hundreds of people from flooded homes.
The road and rail network suffered significant damage.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent condolences on Twitter after the two deaths, calling on Greeks to be vigilant. In addition, he promised that all regions hit by the cyclone will receive state aid.
For two days, civil protection in Greece has been on alert and authorities have recommended avoiding travel to areas affected by the cyclone.
Greece was hit by another hurricane in 2018, when two people died on the island of Evia.
