A court in the state of Wisconsin, in northern United States, has set this Monday a bail of two million dollars (more than 1.7 million euros) for the under 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse, who faces six charges, including first degree murder, for killing a two people and injuring another, during the protests that took place at the end of August in the city of Kenosha on the occasion of the death of the African-American citizen Jacob Blake at the hands of the Police.
The young man’s lawyers white supremacist, originally from the city of Antioch, in Illinois, had done everything possible to block his transfer from this state to Wisconsin, arguing that Rittenhouse safety was not guaranteed with his transfer to an adult prison.
Rittenhouse is accused of killing Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, and Anthony Huber, 26, and wounding Gaige Grosskreutz, 22, with a semi-automatic rifle during the looting and riots that occurred after the peaceful demonstrations that took place on the occasion of the umpteenth episode of institutional violence against the African-American community.
His attorneys, who have claimed that Rittenhouse acted in self-defense, have launched a campaign alongside a number of conservative collectives and supporters of arms, to raise funds with which to pay the bail, imposed by the authorities due to the high risk of flight that exists, since the young man faces a possible life imprisonment and has the support of these groups.
The defense arguments
“Who attacked my client first?” Asked defense attorney Mark Richards, who has assured that Rittenhouse only defended himself from the attacks by Rosenbaum, one of the victims, “from the criminals”, and from the “troublemakers with bad intentions”, for which he has requested a reduction of the bail to 750,000 dollars (640,000 euros).
One of the videos of what happened to which the Public Prosecutor’s Office has had access Kenosha County, shows Rittenhouse running through a parking lot, followed by Joseph Rosenbaum, who unarmed attempted to cut down the assailant before he fatally shot him.
Rittenhouse came along with another group of armed people towards the scene, after the extreme right militia Kenosha Guard encouraged its followers to go to the looting and violent acts that led to the protests to protect private property.
The case of Jacob Blake
The events came hours after Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers declared the state of emergency after several Kenosha County businesses were looted in those days.
The protests began after last August 27 the video in which it looks like Jacob Blake, 29, is shot seven times at close range by a police officer, who was suspended from employment and salary with his partner. The event would have occurred when Blake tried to separate two women who were fighting.
The shooting at Blake, who was in front of his three children when the incident occurred, caused a new wave of demonstrations in cities across the country. The case came at a time when protests over the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor by the police in May and March respectively had not yet subsided.
