Lhe President of the European Council, Charles Michel, is not a carrier of the coronavirus: a new screening test on his person came back negative, his spokesperson announced on Twitter on Friday. The Belgian’s quarantine is lifted, and the European summit postponed to next weekend (Thursday and Friday) will take place.
Charles Michel would normally already chair this Friday (and Thursday) an extraordinary meeting of the heads of state and government of the 27 EU member states. The renewed tensions with Turkey, and the latter’s explorations in Greek and Cypriot waters in search of gas fields, were to be among other things on the menu of discussions.
But the positive coronavirus screening of a security agent, with whom Charles Michel had been in close contact “at the beginning of last week”, had disrupted this agenda. On Tuesday, the former Prime Minister was forced to announce his quarantine, according to Belgian rules for contact persons, as well as the postponement of a week of the summit.
Following a new negative test, he can however now come out of quarantine, and continue without isolation the preparation for the summit on October 1 and 2.
