The Chinese government would rather see the popular TikTok app close its doors than be forced to sell. Insiders tell that Reuters.

American ban

The country would fear it would appear weak if some of the app is sold to the United States. The sources wanted to remain anonymous, because the topic had been discussed in private.

TikTok is not owned by the government, but the developer is located in the country. This, in theory, allows the government to exert pressure to thwart the potential sale. According to two of the sources, the country is willing to apply special regulations to delay a sale of TikTok.

A spokesperson for TikTok maker ByteDance says the government has not yet proposed closing the app in the US.

The US wants to ban TikTok unless the US branch comes into the hands of a domestic company. President Donald Trump fears that TikTok could be used for Chinese espionage.

TikTok maker ByteDance is negotiating with multiple companies about a possible acquisition, including Microsoft. At the same time, the ban is being challenged in court.

Trump is demanding that a buyer be found for TikTok by September 20. Recently, he turned out not to be willing to postpone that deadline.

The US sanctions would prohibit US companies from trading with TikTok. This may also affect the Netherlands. Apple and Google are located in the US and should no longer offer the app on their platform.
