Chelsea has received the seventh addition of this summer. The London top club assured itself on Thursday of the arrival of Stade Rennes keeper Edouard Mendy, who has to compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga.
28-year-old Mendy is a Senegalese international. The goalkeeper signs for five years at Stamford Bridge and reportedly costs Chelsea around 24 million euros.
Attracting Mendy may mean Kepa will lose his base spot. The Spaniard was attracted for 80 million euros two years ago, making him the world’s most expensive goalkeeper, but does not live up to expectations. He recently made a serious mistake against Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool.
The arrival of Mendy also seems to mean that Chelsea has no interest (anymore) in André Onana from Ajax. The Cameroonian goalkeeper was linked to a transition to ‘The Blues’ this summer.
Chelsea is decisive on the transfer market. The Londoners paid substantial sums for Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell and brought in Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr on a free transfer.
Manager Frank Lampard’s team has three points after the first two rounds of play in the Premier League. West Bromwich Albion is the third opponent of the season on Saturday.
