U.S. authorities on Sunday arrested a woman on the US-Canada border near Buffalo, New York, on suspicion of sending the deadly poison by mail to the White House. The woman has Canadian and French citizenship, two sources said on Monday.
It will appear on Tuesday at 16:00. EDT (20:00 GMT), before Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder, Jr., of Buffalo, said a spokeswoman for the federal court in the western district of New York.
“We believe a total of six letters were sent, one to the White House and five to Texas. We cannot confirm that he lived in (the apartment), but he is related to her “, said the Canadian policeman Charles Poirier in front of the building where the search took place.
Poirier could not say exactly where the envelopes were sent to Texas, but the police department in Mission, Texas, received a suspicious letter last week, said Art Flores, a spokesman for the department. The department did not open the envelope and handed it over to the FBI, he said.
Flores also said that police arrested the woman who is believed to have been detained in Buffalo in early 2019, but said she had no records of the arrest.
The FBI is investigating the case of several ricin letters sent to law enforcement and detention institutions in South Texas, a source in the US law enforcement told Reuters.
So far, authorities have not found any links to political or terrorist groups, but the investigation is ongoing, the source said.
The operation is being led by the Canadian police special team for chemicals, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosives.
On Saturday, Canadian police confirmed that the White House letter had been sent from Canada and said the FBI had requested assistance.
The envelope was intercepted at a government post office before reaching the White House.
Castor is naturally found in castor beans, but it takes a deliberate act to turn it into a biological weapon. Castor oil can cause death within 36 to 72 hours of exposure to as little as a needle tip. There is no known antidote.
