Zakaria Labyad was still included in the selection of Morocco for the coming international period on Monday. The attacking midfielder of Ajax can play his first match in more than 2.5 years for his country.
The 27-year-old Labyad was initially not part of the Moroccan selection for the international matches with the Central African Republic in the qualification for the Africa Cup. He is said to replace Selim Amallah of Standard Liège.
It is the first time in a long time that Labyad is part of the selection of Morocco. The five-time international, who is regularly used at Ajax this season, last played for his country against Uzbekistan on March 27, 2018. He has been called up several times in the meantime.
Labyad is not the only Ajax player to report to the selection on Monday, because right back Noussair Mazroaui has also been selected. This also applies to AZ attacker Zakaria Aboukhlal and former Eredivisie players Hakim Ziyech (Chelsea) and Sofyan Amrabat (Fiorentina).
Morocco first awaits a home game with the Central African Republic in Casablanca on Friday. Four days later, the two teams play against each other in the Cameroon city of Douala.
After two rounds of play, Morocco leads with four points in group E, which also includes Mauritania and Burundi. The numbers one and two qualify for the main tournament for the Africa Cup, which will be held in Cameroon at the beginning of 2022.
