A hundred buildings across the United States were lit up in pink, green and blue on Tuesday to mark World Cancer Day. metastatic breast, a disease that currently has no cure and from which some 600,000 people die a year around the world.
These are the overwhelming figures offered by Metavivor, an organization that aims to support those who suffer from the disease, raise awareness in society and ask for more scientific research, and that is also behind this colorful initiative, called “Light Up MBC” (Illuminate metastatic breast cancer).
In total, there have been more than 115 buildings throughout the United States that, when the sun goes down, have lit up pink, green and blue, the colors that represent the disease.
Of the 50 states of the country that have participated, New York has been one of those that has turned the most to the initiative, where the iconic One World Trade Center, Morgan Stanley headquarters, One Bryant Park, the Park Avenue Tower, the popular monumental sculpture The Vessel, have been dyed in these tones. With this campaign, Metavivor tries to publicize the reality of breast cancer, and highlights the fact that it is c estimated that between 20 and 30 percent of women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer will later go on to have a metastasis or stage four, with which they will have to live rest of their lives.
The colors of the disease
“When you die of breast cancer, you die of metastatic breast cancer,” underlines the organization in a statement, which details that this disease usually spreads most often to the bones, liver, lungs, and brain.
