A brown bear has been sentenced to death in Italy after attacking several walkers. Animal rights activists are asking the government to spare him.
Fabio Misseroni (59) and his son Christian Misseroni (28) were hiking on Mount Peller in the North of Italy when a brown bear suddenly appeared on their path. Son Christian was bitten but was able to crawl away when his father attacked the bear. The bear also slapped Fabio hard and the man broke his leg in three places. Christian started making a lot of noise and clapping his hands. The bear therefore quickly ran away.
After the attack, Trentino governor Maurizio Fugatti ordered that the bear be tracked down and killed. Thanks to DNA analysis of the bear’s saliva, the authorities also know which bear the Misseroni’s had run into. The city has developed an entire database of bear DNA because the region has been struggling with such attacks for several years.
Yet there are now more voices against the killing of the animal. They want the circumstances to be investigated first. It could be a female bear trying to protect her cubs.
