Brazilian rider Matheus Barbosa has died after suffering an accident at the Interlagos circuit while competing in a race in the SuperBike Brasil competition.
“The accident occurred in a corner with escape zones and no history of serious accidents. Matheus was seen by the nearest medical team in less than 60 seconds. Still, despite all his efforts unfortunately he could not survive his injuries. The causes of the accident are still unknown and are being investigated by the competent authorities, “the competition explained in a statement.
Barbosa, 23 years old and a native of Anápolis, lost control of his Kawasaki during the race and went straight into a corner before crashing into a metal tower behind the security bars.
“Out of respect for our dear Matheus, and especially the family, all activities for the day were immediately terminated, the remaining race was canceled and the race in which the accident occurred was interrupted immediately by red flag. At this time, the organization’s priority is to dedicate all its attention and support to the Matheus family, “added SuperBike Brasil.
Today Matheus Barbosa lost his life in the Brazilian SBK on the 5th round of the year, at the Interlagos circuit. It hit a containment and died. In 2019 two other pilots died in the same scenario and then the authorities approved the security measures🤦♂️ pic.twitter.com/AMixpBYux3
