The regional governments of Brazil warned this Thursday about a possible “epidemiological tragedy” of great proportions if the Executive refuses to acknowledge that the country is experiencing a second wave of the covid-19 epidemic and refrains from adopting the necessary measures to confront it.
“Any manifestation of denial of the risk of a new spread of the disease in the national territory it could lead to a scenario of epidemiological tragedy of worse proportions than those experienced in the first expansion of cases, “warned the regional health secretariats of the 27 Brazilian states.
The alert was made in a letter that the National Council of Secretaries of Health (Conass), which brings together the health authorities of all states, sent this Thursday to the Ministry of Health and requesting a meeting to discuss the necessary measures to face a second wave of the epidemic.
“The lives lost so far cannot be ignored. The best response that public power can give (to a second wave), in the name of the mourning of thousands of Brazilian families, is an action that is commensurate with the extremely serious situation we are facing.” , adds the letter.
Although the Ministry has ruled out that Brazil is experiencing a second wave of the epidemic and alleges that the numbers are insufficient for such a diagnosis, different specialists have been warning about the sharp increase in deaths, infections and hospitalizations due to covid in recent days.
The largest country in Latin America, with a population of 210 million people, accumulates 168,061 fatalities and 5,981,767 confirmed cases of covid-19, which confirms it as one of the global epicenters of the disease and as the second country with the highest number of deaths and the third with the most infected.
According to the data released today by the Ministry of Health, Brazil registered 606 new deaths and 35,918 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, numbers much higher than those of the last few days and the average of two weeks ago.
Daily death rate rises
The data released by the Ministry indicate that the daily average of deaths from covid in the last 14 days (456 deaths) rose 8.4% this Thursday in relation to the average of two weeks ago, when it was 416 daily deaths.
In the same way, the daily average of infections in the last 14 days amounted to 26,239 infected, with an increase of 17.7% compared to the moving average of two weeks ago.
These figures reinforce the alerts in the sense that, after having managed to reduce cases and deaths from the disease in October to the levels they were in May, Brazil is experiencing a probable second wave in November without having exceeded the first.
In his letter to the Ministry of Health, Conass asks the Government to distribute 20 million tests among the states for the diagnosis of the disease as well as 3,000 million reais (about 566 million dollars) as first measures to face a second wave of covid.
It also demands that the Ministry adopt “immediate measures for the various possible scenarios of the disease in Brazil” and recalls that other countries have already recognized the existence of various mutations of the virus that causes covid and that they are experiencing a second wave of the pandemic.
According to Conass, these countries are reintroducing the social distancing measures adopted to face the first wave and reorganizing their health services.
The government of the president Jair Bolsonaro He is one of the most skeptical in the world about the severity of the pandemic and has criticized the social distancing measures imposed by regional and municipal administrations to combat covid-19.
