Members of the Canadian boxing team learned some bad news on Thursday. As the pandemic is hitting Argentina severely, the continental European qualifiers originally scheduled for May 10-16 have been cancelled.
He said: “Because of the increase in cases in Argentina and South America, we feel it has been several weeks.” It is only a matter of time before the cancellation.
“We have tripled the number of times we have changed airlines to our destinations. It has become very complicated.”
As for the new qualification standards for the Tokyo Olympics, the 33 delegations of the Americas Group are currently in a fog.
“We received this information today, and I am in contact with the Canadian Olympic Committee and my colleagues in other countries on this issue.
“As far as I know, it may be the world ranking that determines the qualifications of athletes. However, due to the pandemic, the last statement was issued in 2019.”
If the procedure is approved, Canada can send three representatives to Tokyo. However, several talented boxers may be excluded from the Olympics. Especially Mandy Bujold participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
“The matches they want to consider were not even included in the original standards in 2017. If there were, we would make a different decision with some boxers.
“For example, we decided not to send some of them to the Pan American Games because we won the World Championships soon. We have decided to participate in other competitions to collect points on the standings, but we never foresee this situation. Pandemic.”
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will resolve the issue before the end of this month. At present, for public health and logistical reasons, it is unthinkable to hold another game in another country.
